I am a new parent, and like you, I am becoming increasingly concerned about the impact we are having on our planet, and the future we are leaving for our children.
Disposable nappies have an enormous environmental impact, taking over 500 years to biodegrade so, yes – that means the first EVER disposable nappy still exists today. Currently Australia uses over 5 million nappies per day (that’s over 1.5 billion per year), accounting for up to 2% of all landfill! I found these figures highly disturbing, and lead me to research other options.
When I started investigating the ‘eco-nappy’ scene in Australia, I was disappointed to find a limited range of expensive options. On top of that, most options contained a lot of unnecessary plastic – from the shipping packet, to the lining of inside the packaging & even the packaging itself. When I couldn’t find a high quality, ultra-absorbent, partially biodegradable nappy that reduced as much ancillary waste as possible – I decided to create one myself.
That’s how Bamboo Behinds were born. Our nappies are ultra-absorbent (up to 1.3L for Size 5!), partially biodegradable, made of bamboo (read: hypoallergenic, breathable, anti-rash) and most importantly they contain as little plastic as possible. From our shipping packaging (100% compostable), to our packets (100% paper) to our boxes (100% cardboard) – we have done everything possible to minimise the amount of plastic entering our precious environment.
